Five years ago we launched a fundraising campaign for Alwan Kindergarten in Syria and our students have been in regular Skype contact with the school and its director, Abdo Al Morie. We first made contact with the school through Campanha Pela Vida Algarve and Alwan Kindergarten is also supported by the American NGO Bridge of Peace Syria. The kindergarten was forced to close last October after a spate of particularly heavy bombing but will be reopening its doors soon so our fundraising has begun again in earnest.
Abdo has also launched a campaign which aims to educate 1000 local children about the dangers of approaching remnants of war. According to estimates, more than five million Syrians live in areas that are heavily contaminated by unexploded devices, including more than two million children who are at risk of falling prey to landmines, cluster munitions and other dangerous devices.
Our latest fundraising event was a 12 km sponsored walk in April. Over 100 people came along and we were led on the walk by record breaking bagpiper Ross Jennings. It was a great day out for a very worthy cause and we have exceeded our target of €2000 so thank you to everyone who donated and took part.
